One of the most interesting parts of the SIGGRAPH conference was the Emerging Technologies (ETech) exhibition. It included many innovative systems for interacting with the 3D world, an area pioneered bythe MIT Media Lab's Hiroshi Ishii, whose Tangible Media Group had a display there.
One of the most unusual demonstrations at ETech was a Laser Plasma Display from Burton, Inc. When most people think of plasma displays they think of flat-panel television, but this was real ionized air, forming a brilliant, noisy three-dimentional image that was in, and of, air.
Yes, the 3D plasma display was very cool. I managed to shoot a short video of the show:
